Gathering to pay tribute to departing Warner Music Canada head Steve Kane and his wife, Debbie Rix, at Toronto’s famed Horseshoe Tavern on Friday night was a large chunk of the city’s music biz elite. They congregated in what seemed like the first large in-person gathering of the clan in almost two years, and the atmosphere was fittingly joyous and celebratory. The guest list was rather a Who’s Who of the Toronto music industry, with representatives from all sectors – record labels, managers, agents, publishers, club bookers, publicists, industry org execs, broadcasters, journalists, and, of course, musicians. Revered singer/songwriter/activist Sarah Harmer has introduced facts of an substantial 2022 North American tour. Her 2019 album Are You Absent acquired Juno and Polaris Prize nominations, but the pandemic prevented good tour assist for it until finally now. Today (Sept. 23), on Global’s The Morning Show, The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) is inducting the rock classic, What About Love, one of the most successful international hits for the band Heart. The honour goes to the tune’s three Canadian songwriters, Brian Allen, Sheron Alton, and Jim Vallance, and the event features a special appearance by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Heart’s Ann Wilson. As part of the virtual presentation, Toronto artist SATE will perform the song live from the El Mocambo.
