Lawyer: Artist didn’t know Michigan parents stayed in studio
A Detroit-area artist whose studio was where the parents of the Oxford High School student charged in a deadly shooting were found by police is cooperating with authorities and didn’t know the couple had stayed overnight, his attorney said Sunday. James and Jennifer Crumbley, who face involuntary manslaughter counts, were found early Saturday inside a Detroit commercial building. The couple’s attorneys have said they didn’t intend to flee, countering authorities who accused them of eluding capture for their alleged role in a school shooting that left four students dead. Their 15-year-old son, Ethan Crumbley, has been charged as an adult with murder, terrorism and other crimes. The couple went to…

An ‘eye’ for trash? This Latino artist is a hit during Art Basel
Cycling around the streets of Miami gave David Anasagasti, an artist known as Ahol Sniffs Glue, the inspiration to place his signature “eye” symbol on pieces of urban trash he finds and give his followers a chance to find them and keep them. His newest concept is now drawing international attention through an exhibition during Miami Art Week that runs parallel to Art Basel. Art Basel, the country’s contemporary art fair that runs through this week in Miami Beach attracts high net-worth individuals from around the world and includes works of artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. It’s not Anasagasti’s first time exhibiting during Miami Art Week, but…

A Potentially ‘Embarrassing’ Nude Self-Portrait That Lucian Freud Disavowed Is Almost Certainly by the Artist, Experts Say
Did Lucian Freud disavow a nude self-portrait because he was embarrassed by it? That could be the case, according to the Guardian, which reports that after an unnamed Swiss collector bought the full-length painting at auction more than two decades ago, only to have the artist and his estate refute the painting’s authorship, three independent studies have now confirmed that the work is indeed an authentic work by Freud. The undated painting, titled Standing Male Nude, was sold at auction in 1997 in Geneva. According to the anonymous buyer, Freud himself telephoned and offered to pay twice the price just to have the self-portrait back in his own hands. Now, after years of…

Lucian Freud painting denied by artist is authenticated by experts | Lucian Freud
Almost 25 years ago, a Swiss art collector bought a Lucian Freud painting – a full-length male nude – at auction. He then received a call from the British artist, asking to buy it from him. The two men did not know each other, and the collector politely refused, as he liked the picture. Three days later, he claims he received another call from a now furious Freud who told him that, unless he sold it to him, he would deny having painted it. The collector, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Observer: “He said: ‘I’ll give you more than you paid, I’ll double it.’ I declined, and he…

Performance artist Hanna Cormick on disability, climate change and why the way we make art needs to change
Interviewing Hanna Cormick requires one to embrace an elastic relationship with time. The performance artist has what she describes as a “trifecta of conditions” — Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome — that affects her joints, organs and ability to stand. She also has severe allergic reactions — including anaphylaxis — to various foods, smells, temperatures, vibrations and chemicals. Since September 2015, Cormick has been living in a positive pressure air-sealed safe room in Canberra. It took a number of tries for ABC RN’s The Stage Show to be able to record an interview with the artist, whether that was due to her experiencing pain,…

Valley News – Bert Dodson, prolific Vermont artist, dies at 83
BRADFORD, Vt. — Bert Dodson, an influential artist and illustrator who spent the bulk of his prolific career in the Upper Valley, has died at the age of 83. A draftsman of daunting skill, Dodson asserted that drawing, and art-making in general, is everyone’s birthright and wrote and illustrated two books on drawing meant to encourage people to take it up regardless of prior experience. “Anyone who can hold a pencil can learn to draw with some degree of proficiency,” he wrote in Keys to Drawing, which came out in 1985. By that time, he was well-ensconced in the Bradford area, having moved there in 1977. He would spend the…
