Spider-Man: No Way Home has passed the $1.69 billion mark at the global box office to become the sixth highest grossing movie of all time.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has enjoyed huge box office success to become the sixth highest grossing movie of all time. Starring Tom Holland in the lead, the movie marks the third installment of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series, as well as the seventh appearance of the character in the MCU. Holland’s Spidey was last seen in a mid-credits cameo in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, with his last featured role coming in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, the last movie of the MCU’s Phase 3.
The Spider-Man franchise is one that has been fraught with complexities and off-screen difficulties for years, with a legal ownership battle between Marvel Studios and Sony. It is also a franchise that has seen three different actors cast in the lead role in the space of 14 years. Tobey Maguire’s live-action debut Spider-Man hit the big screen in 2002, and was followed by two sequels, before he was replaced by Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Holland was ultimately cast in another reboot, and made his debut as Spidey in 2016’s MCU hit Captain America: Civil War, with most recent release Spider-Man: No Way Home being his seventh (cameo included) appearance as Peter Parker.
The 27th MCU movie has proven to be a massive box office success, with reports in Variety detailing that the film has now grossed more than $1.69 billion globally (not adjusted for inflation), and as a result has become the sixth-highest grossing movie of all time. Reports come as the movie No Way Home fulfilled box office projections and returned to #1 at the North American box office this weekend, taking in a little over $14 million domestically between Friday and Sunday. The movie first opened in December 2021, and has so far taken $721 million domestically, as well as $970 million internationally, enjoying great success in the U.K., where it is the fourth-biggest movie ever.
Box office performance is key for blockbusters; they are typically the tentpole releases that keep the studios successful and make money, and there is little doubt that both Sony and Marvel Studios will be delighted by the success this film has enjoyed. Even by MCU standards, the Jon Watt’s directed epic has been a resounding success, which could be down to the surprise appearances of both Maguire and Garfield as Spider-Man within the movie, a plot twist that generated a lot of hype upon release. The success of the film indicates that the box office is beginning to return to some degree of normalcy, which bodes well for future releases, particularly for MCU Phase 4.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the highest grossing Spider-Man movie, which would suggest that audiences’ appetite for the character remains as strong as ever. Marvel will no doubt be looking to build on this success moving forward, and will hope that upcoming MCU releases, such as Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder, perform as well if not better. No Way Home marks the final film of Holland’s MCU contract, but the actor has expressed enthusiasm at the prospect of playing the character again, and a sequel is believed to be in development. Even if Holland never dons the Spidey suit again, his legacy will certainly be cemented by the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and its role in reviving the post-pandemic box office.
