Across his inventive follow, ektor garcia (b. 1985, Red Bluff, California) worries the hierarchies of gendered and racialized labor, combining a queer punk sensibility with the handcraft traditions of Mexico, his ancestral homeland.
For his exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery, garcia labored with college, staff, and college students at the University of Washington’s Ceramic and Steel Arts Constructing to make a collection of new linked-chain sculptures built in ceramic, copper, and glass. Comprised of specific, interlocking hyperlinks, these chains will variety a series of mutual and contingent relationships throughout their constitutive pieces as they suspend and drape through the double-height quantity of the gallery. Integrated among the linked-chain sculptures, garcia will install a assortment of objects from his Mexico Town studio, alongside with butterflies manufactured of crocheted copper wire that escape the confines of the gallery and inhabit interstitial spaces of the museum.
